Ohio Innovation Takes Flight at the National Advanced Air Mobility Industry Forum

In October, TotalSim was proud to exhibit at the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence Industry Forum in Springfield, Ohio. As an Ohio-based company, we’re always excited to support local innovation alongside JobsOhio, the Dayton Development Coalition, and the Advanced Air Mobility Institute.

This year’s event gathered industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to discuss how Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) will reshape the future of transportation — from eVTOL aircraft and regional air taxis to automated logistics and critical response operations.

A few key themes stood out:

  • Digital simulation is accelerating certification and design cycles, allowing developers to validate aerodynamic performance, thermal management, and safety systems before ever building physical prototypes.

  • Collaboration between public and private sectors is essential — bringing together federal agencies, startups, and established OEMs to streamline testing and regulatory pathways.

  • Sustainability and noise reduction continue to drive engineering decisions, underscoring the importance of simulation-based optimization early in the design process.

For TotalSim, the conversations reaffirmed the growing role of virtual testing in enabling safer, more efficient aircraft and faster time to market. We’re proud to contribute our expertise to the teams advancing AAM technology — and even prouder that it’s happening right here in Ohio.

Computational Feather Dynamics: A Turkey’s Flight

A diagram of a wild turkey's wings

Thanksgiving means different things to different people. For me, it’s a moment to pause, give thanks, and appreciate everything we have — good food, good company, and hopefully a little downtime.

One of the most iconic parts of the holiday, of course, is the turkey. Beyond knowing that one usually ends up on the dinner table, I realized I actually don’t know much about turkeys themselves. So, in true CFD fashion, I went down a rabbit hole — or should I say, a turkey roost — to learn about the aerodynamics of how turkeys fly.

What I found was fascinating (and a little humbling). Turns out, wild turkeys can fly — just not like eagles. Their wings are shorter, rounder, and built for quick bursts and agility rather than soaring long distances. They can hit speeds over 50 mph for short flights but rarely stay airborne for more than a quarter mile.

The article below dives into the science behind it all — wing shapes, flap rates, and how these big birds manage to get off the ground at all. It’s a fun read, especially if you like thinking about nature through an engineer’s lens.

So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, here’s to gratitude, good food, and being thankful we weren’t born turkeys.

Simcenter X: Cloud Power for Advanced Simulation

siemens-rl24-simcenter-x-newsroom-01-1280x720

Understanding complex systems requires advanced simulation. To predict real-world performance, you need to explore far beyond a handful of design candidates or operating points. You need to move past single-domain analysis and capture the full picture — systems, subsystems, and multiphysics interactions. That means having universal access to fluids, thermal, mechanical, and systems simulation, along with intelligent design exploration, workflow automation, AI model support, and seamless process and data management. And, of course, you need all of it delivered through simple, flexible, cloud-based licensing.

Why Cloud?

The “cloud” doesn’t just mean moving data offsite — it means transforming the way you work. It’s freedom from owning and maintaining IT infrastructure. It’s decluttering your systems, outsourcing hardware and administration, and focusing on what matters: engineering innovation. With cloud and SaaS, you only pay for what you use. You become leaner, faster, and more adaptive — a true minimalist in the world of computer-aided engineering.

The benefits are clear: virtually unlimited compute and software resources. No more queuing during peak workloads or compromising between projects. The cloud removes those constraints, enabling more ambitious simulations and broader design exploration. You can convert heavy, immovable CAPEX into agile, manageable OPEX.

But there’s always been a catch — configuring and maintaining a cloud environment that supports CFD workflows isn’t trivial. Setting up CPUs, caches, storage, authentication, and networking, managing software installations, licenses, and updates — it takes expertise and disrupts productivity. Ensuring security and cost efficiency adds even more complexity.

Enter Simcenter X

That’s why Siemens, working closely with Amazon Web Services (AWS), developed Simcenter X — to make high-performance computing (HPC) in the cloud truly accessible, scalable, and seamless.

Launching with Simcenter STAR-CCM+, Simcenter X integrates directly into your existing workflow. Access it through your browser or from within the software itself — with zero disruption. The platform handles everything automatically: provisioning virtual clusters, launching remote desktop sessions, running simulations at scale, tearing down environments when complete, and returning your data to your desktop.

Simcenter X runs on optimized AWS infrastructure, configured and managed by Siemens to deliver the best performance for your simulations. Migrating your workflow to the cloud is incredibly simple — just a few clicks. Work remotely using desktop streaming, monitor cloud HPC jobs from any device (even your phone), and bring results back for further analysis — all without ever leaving your familiar Simcenter STAR-CCM+ environment.

As an all-in-one solution, Simcenter X uses Cloud Credits — a unified, pay-as-you-go model that covers hardware, software, data transfer, and storage. This single-session cost model simplifies budgeting and cost tracking for organizations of any size.

Why Choose Simcenter X?

Accessible
Cloud-based services streamline your IT stack, accelerate deployment, and simplify onboarding. Focus your time on simulation — not infrastructure management.

Flexible & Scalable
